Stewardship is a Calling

Everything Belongs to God

Psalm 24:1 says, “The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it” - there is nothing that we can possess or own that doesn’t already belong to God. God is the Creator and rightful owner of all things, as we read in Psalm 50:10 - “For every wild animal of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills. And Paul teaches that, as Christians, we no longer belong even to ourselves: “Do you not know…that you are not your own? For you were bought with a price…” (I Co. 6:19-20). We believe and proclaim the truth that everything belongs to God.

God is Generous

From the very beginning of creation in Genesis all the way to the vision of the new creation in Revelation, God’s incredible generosity is revealed again and again - through creation, through God’s covenant faithfulness, through mercy and forgiveness, and most clearly in and through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. As we read in John 3:16, maybe the most well-known verse in the Bible, “for God so loved the world that He gave His only Son”, the greatest gift of all. Scripture teaches us that humans have been created in God’s image, meaning that we have the capacity to reflect in our own lives the generosity of God.

God Entrusts Us with Resources and Calls Us to Be Faithful Stewards

We read in Genesis 1:26 that God entrusted the care, or stewardship, of creation to humans. The earth and all that is in it - including our resources and our possessions - ultimately belongs to God, who has called us to be wise and faithful stewards of what He graciously gives to us. God calls us to care for creation, for His church, for our neighbor, and for the most vulnerable in our world. As followers of Jesus, we have a responsibility to live out our faith in ways that reflect God’s generosity as we “contribute to the needs of the saints and extend hospitality to strangers” (Romans 12:13). God provides us with all the resources we need to answer the call to be faithful stewards and reflect His generosity in how we manage and share what we have, which already belongs to God in the first place!
